Hartley | Seattle, WA USA | 09/28/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "Poring over British music 'zines involves one major hazard: Discovering a new artist/album that you can't wait to get your hands on-but it's "import only"! You could grow a ZZ Top beard waiting for some of these titles to get distributed outside of England. I have to tip my hat to Amazon for zipping me a copy of Matt Deighton's "You Are The Healer" after many animal-caught-in-headlights stares from music store clerks over a period of several months.This album had me from cut 1, which sounds like a lost tune from John Martyn's "Solid Air" period. In fact, every song had that same vibe of timeless familiarity without sounding derivative or self-conciously "retro". There is a warm, "analog" feel to this folk/jazz/rock that you don't hear much anymore. Although the project is credited to Deighton, his songwriting partner Nicola Bright-Thomas lends her lovely, Laura Nyro style vocals to a couple numbers.Keyboardist/acid-jazz forefather Brian Auger is also a welcome addition to the sessions. Highly recommended if you enjoy John Martyn,Mark/Almond Band, Richard Thompson or Beth Orton."
