"This piece by Kurt Weill could be my favorite of his, but then it's hard to pinpoint a favorite especially as I also love `Der Silbersee' a great deal as well. Kurt Weill's music is always the epitome of music for the time in which he writes. Listening to Marie Galante always takes me to the docks of New Orleans. I can envision exactly what's happening with every note. The sad life of Marie is felt but yet so is her unending hope.

This recording includes a few pieces not before recorded though the music to Marie Galante is incidental as Marie Galante was not a musical or operetta.

The music has a very French flare and resounds with 1930's influences but yet belongs decidedly to Weill's pen. The tango remains in its original form without words and several orchestral pieces are heard for the first time as well. All around if you are an earlier Weill fan than you will like this piece and it's good for the transition of Weimar Weill to the Broadway Weill that came later.

Also included is the voice and piano score to his unfinished work Davy Crockett. It's very good as well though I've never quite taken to it personally. It comes secondary on the album."
