Another excellent pair of performances

"As with their readings of the first two symphonies, Hickox and the LSO are excellent here. Hickox's timing of the fourth is much, much tauter than the composer's own (which occupied a CD on its own), but never feels rushed. The sound quality is very good, although not in the demo-room bracket like that of the first two symphonies."

"It is Harry Pearson of The Absolute Sound that I must thank for turning me on to the music of Sir Malcolm Arnold many years ago through his printed recommendation of the composer's Symphony No. 5, which I purchased many years ago as an import LP and now enjoy on CD. Symphony No. 3 is an intense work that seems to look inward, while Symphony No. 4 is more outgoing, featuring a battery of percussion instruments that add propulsive punctuation to the musical text. Arnold's symphonies feature a unique blend of hummable melodies and intense, brooding passages. If you enjoy orchestral music but have never heard the symphonies of Sir Malcolm Arnold, you are missing out on something truly enjoyable. This Chandos CD is a good place to start."
