A Quirky Favorite
John D. Steyers | San Diego, CA, USA | 05/24/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It is difficult for me to explain exactly why I am so fond of the music of Malcolm Arnold. He is widely regarded as a "lightweight" in modern music, possibly becuase he not only composed film scores, he composed an astounding output of music for film. But he did so much more! He was a hightly individual composer -- his music sounds not at all like anyone else's. It can be "funny", but it can also be very dark. This collection of some of his concertos is something of a rarity, I think, for virtually all of them have never been recorded elsewhere. He wrote especially well for winds. This disc is a perfect companion to his symphonies."
