Malcom Arnold's popular reputation is based on his success as a film music composer, particularly for The Bridge on the River Kwai. But he also wrote nine symphonies and a host of colorful and effective orchestra pieces, these concertos among them. The Second Clarinet Concerto has an absolutely hilarious jazz finale that makes it a great piece to try out on your friends. Arnold was an exceptionally gifted orchestrator, and his writing for solo instruments, particularly winds and brass, is always extremely effective.
