"Sorry - YES- I did laugh at the earlier review that identified this CD as "Hawaiian Music" ? But let's be fair... it overlooks the fact that Malang Mané is from Senegal ( that's West Africa...eh?)
and he plays wonderful traditional wooden balafon music in the Balanta stylee. This music is all about interlocking polyryhthms on the Balofon - a wooden xylphone with gourd resonators - struck with mallets that have home-made rubber heads. Soft organic funky polyryhthms. Ya mon! File this CD with your West African collection or with Gamelon music from Bali or Indonesia, or Steve Reich's interlocking drumming circa "Music for 18 Musicians", or next to Evelyn Glennie... Or as Michael Jackson so aptly put it... "Beat IT!""
