"This first installment in the MTT-SFSO Mahler cycle is kind of a let down. This 'tragic' symphony that has lots of rage, anger, and sadness comes off somewhat flat here. The orchestra explores the sad emotions well, but MTT never lets them go and get violent like this piece requires. It all seems a little too micro-managed. The sound is very good and the SFSO plays very well, as they do throughout their Mahler cycle. There are other recordings that I would choose before this one: Boulez-Vienna, Fischer-Budapest, or Eschenbach-Philadelphia."
