A memorable recording

"The universal appreciation of Mahler's music benefited from the stereo recording boom in the late fifties. But pioneers performing his music - in the face of all conservative, negative views - existed before that time. Among them, we find Walter, Klemperer, Horenstein, Scherchen - and Carl Schuricht. The latter was one of the great classical conductors, famous for his Bruckner and Wagner interpretations.

Under Schuricht's baton, we have for instance this excellent mono recording of Mahler's third symphony. It is a balanced, sophisticated reading, but nonetheless, it expresses the raw power which Mahler's score requires. Especially the first movement comes off very well.

It is very valuable to have an early account of this work from a great conductor. We can only imagine how controversial this work appeared to its first audiences. Schuricht's account preserves that impression, delivering a memorable account that is a must have for every serious collection. Moreover, it is one of the cheapest accounts available.
