"The cast in this recording of Macbeth are all excellent, and are led by a great conductor. Claudio Abbado conducts the La Scala Orchestra in the opening performance of La Scala's 1975 season. Abbado is a great conductor, and does not disappoint here. Piero Cappuccilli gives a memorable performance as Macbeth. His rich baritone voice is perfect for the role of Macbeth. Shirley Verrett is a good Lady Macbeth, but she is not the best. Her voice seems slightly off her mark. Nicolai Ghiaurov is probably the last great Verdian bass. He is perfect as Banquo. Franco Tagliavini is a wonderful addition to the cast as Macduff. His "Ah, la paterna mano" is beautifully sung."
