The Journey Continues...
Mike Smith | 06/27/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The fourth full album in the Mythos line, they deliver once again, as usual. Mythos is back and treading in the familiar territory of mesmerizing the listener with an enchanting world of mystery and wonder. Every sound you hear was put there for a reason, and the vision of the artists involved is fully realized in this work. This is very classy, exquisite music with a lot of depth and variety. There are uplifting times, and relaxing times, every moment an enjoyable one with no sounds out of place or bothersome. Actually, everything by Mythos is just stellar (I have their previous 3 albums which I can also recommend, entitled "Mythos", "The Reality of a Dreamer" and "Eternity"). If you are new to Mythos, take the plunge and get any of their albums. You are in for a real treat. If you like this type of music, I can also recommend Amethystium, Blue Stone, Sleepthief, Balligomingo, and Delerium. Real top shelf stuff."

"Mythos is amoung my favorite "New Age" groups. I teach "Spinning" classes at my health club, and am able to use some of their music. Can use as ambient background music at home."
Not Their Best Effort

"First a little background, I have a Bachelors degree in music, have been a professional musician for over 25 years now, I am a published writer/arranger, own my own production facility and like all genres of music.

While I admit, I'm a little new to the world of Mythos, I have owned their "Reality Of a Dreamer" project for quite some time and decided to update and buy their two most recent titles, including "Purity." Please know some of my comments are purely from a compositional viewpoint and a are going to sound more like a music critic than an average listener, but here it goes.

This project, "Purity" falls way short of "Reality Of a Dreamer" as it relates to harmonic interest, melodic lines and general production. As I listened to it I thought to myself, "they are running out of ideas and keep re-hashing the same material over and over again." While I love Middle Eastern music, the modes, instruments, voicings, etc. I felt like that genre was overdone on this project. For me, it was flat musically, not a lot of pieces moved me emotionally. How many different ways can you use a loop, let it run for 4 1/2 to 5 minutes and meander around with different textures and no real point to your melodic line. I felt like they were grasping, or maybe gasping, for ideas. Maybe they were nearing the end of themselves creatively, I don't know. Sometimes you have to take a break from creating and re-charge, could be the issue with this project.

Sure, I know the genre of "new-age" music, which I have trouble with that moniker anyway, is supposed to be soothing background, move your soul, stir your emotions music, but can it not be interesting musically too? Take me somewhere with your melodic material, vary your harmonic structure more, create some interest with counter-melodies and chord substitutions. This project to me sounded a little too much like dinner music or elevator music for my tastes. If I were producing one question I would have asked in the studio was, "Are there any other styles we can explore here gentlemen?" Or, "Does every song need a loop?"

Again, overall, I like what Mythos puts out. For the most part very creative and from working in the studio for most of my career I know it's difficult to always bat a thousand when you put out a product. I will buy more of their product in the future but I just feel like that this is not their best effort."
