CD Reviews

Best real old school punk/hardcore album
superbloke | New York, USA | 12/11/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is it!  Probably the best real old school punk/hardcore album in a very long time.  MDC was never quite the same after founder guitarist and songwriter Ron Posner (x-con ron) quit back in 1985.  Other than a brief stint with Bill Connors and Rancid's Matt Freeman (Hey Cop), MDC's Dave Dictor was entertaining one mediocre line-up after another for years.  With this reunion inlcuding original bass player Mikey Donaldson (Offenders, DRI, SDH), it's obvious the chemistry is still there in spades.  Although 25 years later, these old fogies can still rock.  This cd is a non-stop musical assault combined with a lyrical excellence reminiscent of DK's Jello Biafra.  A sonic relief over post-punk bands like NOFX, where every medio-core pop song really does sound the same and other than their continual name-dropping are about as deep as a puddle of piss.  Glad to have you guys back!  Take a lesson folks.

Little did Kurt Cobain know when...
maz | Kent, UK | 12/13/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Little did Kurt Cobain know when he was thrown in jail with a paltry 49 cents and his favorite Millions of Dead Cops tape that the original blokes would get back together and put out a new cd.  Rock'n'roll over in your grave Kurt!  While alternative might have become mainstream, MDC is still - what you see is what you get - true to form Texas-bred hardcore.  Try and find a song that doesn't live up to 1981 when they were there inventing it.  This ain't some generic retread - this is the real deal."
MDC returns in original form
Jesse Nelson | Tucson, AZ USA | 06/11/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I have to admit, I tend to like MDC's more humor based, or free ranging side. My favorite tracks on this are "Ballad of G.W.," "Sick of It," "Prick Faced Bastard" (all three a bit more humor based), and "Timmy Yo" (a mellow tune, with great punk scene commentary). A lot of the faster tracks remind me of very early MDC, which is no wonder, because it is the original line-up. It's cool to see they can still move at that speed. Not a favorite release of mine because I lean towards like their more experiemental tracks, I'd still give it a 4, because this is what punk was meant to be, not the self-indulgent "sing about me, or my girlfriend, or how I'm bored" or whatever other crap passes as punk nowadays."
