Synopsis

Album Description
Subtitled - The King Anthology 1952-55. The first ever legal anthology of one of the greatest & most individual r&b ladies of the 1950s. Lula's soft brittle style was a direct precursor of what evolved into soul music in the early 1960s. Echoes of her phrasing can be heard in the recordings of Maxine Brown, Esther Phillips, & particularly her contemporary Mabel John. 24 tracks, featuring every important recording by King's first lady of Chicago r&b including the original versions of 'Rock Love' & 'Drown In My Own Tears'. 12-page booklet contains extensive liner notes with many photos. Ace. 2003.

CD Reviews

The Queen of King
B. Margolis | Minneapolis, MN United States | 07/29/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Even though she basically had no hits at all (other the opening track which was a Sonny Thompson orchestra record that she sang on), she continued to record some of most sassy R&B of the 1950's. She had a very high voice (not unlike Esther Phillips or even Dinah Washington).

I love everything I've heard of hers...and this CD is an essential addition to my (and anyone else's) CD collection."
