CD Reviews

Maybe he's a Tramp, but he's got style..
mondodave | Los Angeles, Ca. United States | 07/26/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Guess I discovered these Kent recordings late -- they are undeniably rich and fun. Fulson has it all -- an authoritative singing voice, witty, often humorous lyrics, catchy tunes,( even if most are twelve bar variants,) cool sounding guitar leads on his ES-5, and 335, and even some hip horn arrangements. This is pure late to mid sixties blues, with some R and B layering on it. Fulson was known as a west coast "uptown" bluesman, but believe me, it's all primitive enough to "modern" ears. They start off cheap, then when "Tramp" become a hit, Kent starts to put more money, (horns and charts) into Fulson's sessions, and they all work. Hell, the bass player egregiously blows a cue on "Tramp," and they STILL left it in. And left it in the "follow up" instrumental version, "Pico." There must be a dozen variations on "Tramp," that's how big a hit it was. That said, there are very few bad cuts on this collection. I've been listening to it nonstop for a while, now. If you really wanna be hip, check out Fulson, then turn your friends onto him!"
