(4 out of 5 stars)

"This disc is a good companion to RCA's first 'Greatest Hits' compilation for the Louis Armstrong neophyte. Of course, any experienced aficionado of Pops need not apply as they probably have most of this material already. However for the new Louis fan who may have watched the recent Ken Burn's JAZZ documentary, this CD in addition to the first RCA CD are fine intros. The versions of Save it Pretty Mama, I've Got the World on a String and Pennies from Heaven are definitive, and there is a wealth of other great material here. Drawbacks? The scattershot order of tracks prevent the new listener from fully appreciating Armstrong's evolution as an artist. Also, the choice to begin the disc with the worst track (an overblown 1970 track with a uninspired and nameless orchestra that sounds as if it is escaped from the Wayne Newton Theater in Branson, Missouri) is unfortunate. Otherwise this is a fine first step to those individuals who have been blessed to have been introduced to New Orleans' greatest export."
