CD Reviews

Just completely awful

"You know what's *really* annoying to me?

The fact that there must be several MUCH more deserving albums from the 70's that obviously require more in the way of creativity, songwriting and just overall talent that are rapidly fading away.

Meanwhile, a horrible piece of garbage like Metal Machine Music gets all kinds of totally undeserved attention these days, despite being one of the noisiest, crappiest and most obnoxious albums that ever came out of the entire decade. Guitar feedback absolutely *stinks*. All because of a contractual obligation?

And why do so many people claim to *like* this album, you ask? Because these days (well actually, for the last 15 years or so) implementing noise into rock music has been considered not only acceptable among the majority of young teenage music listeners these days, but actually enjoyable. I totally don't get it, but it's true.

REALLY? Enjoyable? THIS album? I will never understand todays generation. I realize everything comes down to personal preference, but songwriting is significantly more important than straight up unbearable noise (at least, it most certainly *should* be) and Metal Machine Music simply doesn't deserve to be remembered (or praised) in the slightest.

You could argue that it helped pave the way for allowing noise to be utilized in rock music these days. You could also argue adding noise helped to slowly deteriorate rock altogether and turn it into a big pile of uninteresting secondrate crap (like the majority of it we hear today).

If Lou Reed intended this album to be a huge joke, well, the joke is obviously on him. Lou Reed himself released several other solo albums where more dedication was obviously given to the music, otherwise he wouldn't have taken the time to lay down a set of songs.

He didn't lay down a set of songs for this horrible album- he laid down a piece of unlistenable garbage.

If it wasn't for Transformer and Berlin, his reputation could have potentially been permanently damaged and never taken seriously again as a musician. Imagine if this album had been released *before* Transformer and Berlin. Yikes.

Anyway, yes. Never listen to Metal Machine Music. Ever ever ever. The fact it's remembered and actually getting attention gives the 70's a bad name and is certainly insulting to... everybody making music back then."
