CD Reviews

Excelent!

"This CD is the fusion of traditional Sones Huastecos (aka Huapangos) and their charesteric Fiddle improv with the magical realism of a grassroots poet from Tamaulipas. I could go on & write more about the music or the witty lyrics...instead I will simply translate the last song for you:

When a man is truly devoted,

When a man is truly devoted,

He takes his girlfriend to the altar,

He takes his girlfriend to the altar.

With his girlfriend he goes to the altar,

When a man is truly devoted,

When a man is truly devoted,

With his girlfriend he goes to the altar.

Before & after the vows,

They have to get up to speed,

And not put the family planning

in a bottomless sack.

If life teaches them

The purity of love.

The purity of love,

And if life teaches them.

The purity of love,

And if life teaches them.

If life teaches them,

the purity of love.

Even if the stork pays a visit...don't forget my friend,

That the small family...has a higher quality of life.

When a women puts in the effort,

When a women puts in the effort,

Just like her husband,

Just like her husband.

When a women puts in the effort,

Just like her husband,

Just like her husband,

When a women puts in the effort.

She spends her life all smiles & giggles,

And her greatest desire met...

When the stork arrives with that beloved child.

It was the month of February,

It was the month of February,

Write it down to have a record,

Write it down to have a record.

It was the month of February,

Write it down to have a record.

Write it down to have a record,

It was the month of February.

The stork would arrive,

It arrived at a lumbering trot,

And concealed in its basket,

Was a conspicously big boy.

His father tries his best,

His mother a devoted saint.

His mother a devoted saint,

His father tries his best.

His mother a devoted saint,

His father tries his best.

His father tries his best,

His mother a devoted saint.

When the midwife yelled out,

And very patriotically exclaimed,

This is a real macho,

Just look at the size of his tool!

The midwife on that occassion,

Was overcome with an inmense anxiety,

With an inmense anxiety

On that occassion the midwife was overcome.

With an inmense anxiety,

On that occassion the midwife was overcome.

The midwife on that occassion,

Was overcome with an inmense anxiety.

And she said with great excitement,

Come so that you can see it yourself,

He really is well endowed,

He is like a Sebu bull.

The well endowed boy could only laugh,

And he was barely born.

He was barely born,

And the well endowed boy could only laugh.

He was barely born,

And the well endowed boy could only laugh.

The well endowed boy could only laugh,

And he was barely born.

And beginning on that date,

He only grew bigger,

In the midst of the joy,

The satisfaction and the pleasure.

The best Huapango trio

"This CD is unbelieveable. It sounds as if the same eight bars are coming around for an hour, but with such lively energy and through such deliciously subtle variations, you will NEVER tire of this robust, cheerful, almost trance-inducing set. If you understand Spanish, or care to look up the lyrics in the accompanying booklet, these songs are at turns poetic and hilarious. Soaring violin, heroic and graceful falsettoes, and heartbeat-steady, pulsing guitar rhythyms make "The Muse" one of the best damned CDs ever made."

"This is central american music that is very rarely (if at all) heard. The wailing beautiful fiddle is more reminiscent of mississippi folk as heard on harry smith folk anthologies that any other latin music I've heard, tho contains unmistakable falsetto vocal that will melt your soul and the incredible almost awkward guitar that nonetheless completes the songs to perfection. I was blown away when I first heard songs from this album and have never turned back. If you only experience of latin music is buena vista et al the broaden your horizons with this worthy purchase."
