CD Reviews

BEAUTY AND STRENGTH
Chris R Jusell | 09/27/2003

"This was one of the most amazing listening experiences I've had in a very long time. From the beauty of the Satoh to the rapturous Debussy and powerful Ravel, Anne Akiko Meyers is a phenomenom! Thank you!!!"
A great CD

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Like her previous CD's, Anne Akiko Meyers constantly impressed me with her powerful and controlled playing. The Ravel is the highlight of the CD, a masterpiece of violin literature by the best French composer who ever lived. The Debussy, while not as polished on the part of the composer, is as well played on this CD as anything else. The Satoh, Takemitsu, and Messaien are all excellent pieces.
There are only a few flaws: overall, the piano is too quiet - there are some places in the score of the Ravel (such as the end of the Blues movement) that are marked triple-forte, and at these moments the pianist doesn't go above a regular forte. Also, Ms. Meyers hits a few notes, usually high on the e-string, that are sharp from the get-go, and she doesn't fix them - this could be a stylistic choice, but intonation is intonation.
Overall, a great CD, well worth buying - also check out her other CD's; she's a great player who I think is as good as Perlman, with a few idiosyncracies that can make her even more fun to listen to."
Magnificent pleasure

"The purity of her sound and genuine interpretation draws us into her world from the first phrase. She is truly one of the most magnificent artists of our times. I highly recommend this disc to all classic music lovers."
