CD Reviews

The Very Best Among The Lettermen Collection Released !
Edgardo Valenzuela | Toronto Canada | 10/30/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"My frustration in searching for the hard to find songs of The Lettermen is over. For me this is dream come true collection. The best so far that I got.

My KUDOS to the producer of this compilation. This shows that he's a true blue-blooded collector himself for giving us the 28 best songs of The Lettermen in one CD for the VERY FIRST TIME.

Highly recommended to all the collectors out there !"
Many Good Songs, Generally Good Sound
Roy F. Johnson | Columbia, TN United States | 10/25/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Twenty eight songs is a lot. All are good songs, but not exactly a "complete hits" album. The CD was produced in the Phillipines which may explain the inclusion of two non-English songs (Dahil Sa 'Yo and Ikaw).

It is worth noting that the Lettermen scored highest on the Adult Contemporary (AC) charts but also did well on the Billboard Hot 100 (BB). There are ten hit single songs out of 20 that charted. All of the ten are well chosen, but I would have also included "Come Back Silly Girl" (AC-3, BB-17)and "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" (BB-44) and perhaps not included the non-English songs. One track, "Going Out of My Head/Can't Take My Eyes off You", is live.

Sound quality is generally good, but there is a faint hiss on some songs and the volume seems to be too high (as noted on Audacity, a computer editing program).

If you additionally purchase "The Lettermen Greatest Hits - 10 Best Series", you will get four more charted songs, but that CD contains only 10 tracks.

Wonderful hits from The Lettermen

"Complete Hits by The Lettermen gives us a lot of fine music to enjoy! I loved The Lettermen from the moment I first heard them sing; they sing and harmonize very well and their sound is just perfect for relaxation. The Lettermen worked hard to deliver their ballads with a great deal of sensitivity and it showed every time they performed; this is special. In addition, the quality of the sound is excellent and I like that artwork, too.

The album starts with The Lettermen doing only their very best on the theme from "Seventh Dawn;" they never sounded better and the strings are used very well in the musical arrangement. "I Only Have Eyes For You" is heavenly; The Lettermen make it all sound so easy--but of course we know it really wasn't all that easy; their talents always carried them through. "I Only Have Eyes For You" is a major highlight of this album. In addition, "The Wonder Of You" features The Lettermen squarely front and center--which is quite all right by me! I love it. The Lettermen play with the keys a bit to make "The Wonder Of You" a true stand-out of this album; and the theme from "A Summer Place" is faultlessly performed, too.

"The Way You Look Tonight" stuns me with its beauty; The Lettermen play again with minor and major keys and it all holds its own very well especially with the strings in the background. "Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing" comes from the 1955 film of the same name; and The Lettermen outdo even themselves on this grand number! The lush musical arrangement perfectly complements The Lettermen as they sing "Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing." "When I Fall In Love" shimmers like the brightest gold on the planet when The Lettermen tackle it; they deliver this smoothly and their sound is very easy on the ear to say the least. Listen also for a fine medley of "Goin' Out Of My Head" and "Can't Take My Eyes Off You." The Lettermen do this medley up right and again they employ a gorgeous musical arrangement to go with their singing; wow, how that crowd loves them!

"Smile," a song written partly by the immortal Charlie Chaplin, gets the royal treatment from The Lettermen--and Chaplin would be proud! "Smile" is very poignant and The Lettermen were born to sing ballads like this; it's absolutely a major highlight of this album. "Too Young" is another hit that The Lettermen aces as effortlessly as if it were mere breathing; "Too Young" features great harmonizing and I think you'll like this very much.

"Traces" is another very emotional ballad that The Lettermen deliver passionately; and that's grand. "Worlds" is perfect "mood music;" The Lettermen sing this wonderfully along with music that fits in just right for this ballad. "Shangri-La" is very pretty and you're bound to remember it if you haven't heard it already; and I really like "Warn." The CD ends beautifully with The Lettermen giving us a sublime medley of "Traces" and "Memories." The Lettermen's work doesn't get any better than this; and it leaves me wanting more.

This is clearly a must-have album for fans of this incredible group; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will not be disappointed. It even makes a fine starter CD for people just discovering the outstanding artistry of The Lettermen.
