Synopsis

Album Description
The orchestral work Taras Bulba describes in music the fate of the Cossack leader Taras Bulba as it is told in Nicolai Gogol?s patriotic novella. Janáèek?s final opera, From the House of the Dead, follows the plot of Dostoyevsky?s eponymous tale. The orchestral suite is an uncompromising staging of the work?s atmosphere in the imaginary theater of the listener?s head. Not long after the end of World War I, in early 1920, Janáèek wrote his Ballad of Blaník, which is based on a poem of the same name. Christian Arming first conducted the Janáèek Philharmonic Orchestra in 1995, at only 24 years of age. In 1996 he was appointed director of the orchestra there and thus became the youngest Austrian orchestra director.
