Synopsis

Album Description
Originally a poem from the late 1700s by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and revised a century later by French composer Paul Dukas who created a musical piece, or "scherzo," that uses themes and instrumentation to "narrate" the story of an apprentice who tries to bring brooms to life while his master is away. This story later became the inspiration for Disney's famed full-feature animated film, Fantasia. This album contains a unique story version created especially for this release by three accomplished specialists in children's entertainment. Instead of using over two dozen musicians usually required to perform the piece, musical director Jim Timmens scaled it down to kid size to better accompany the narration of Marshall Izen. Previously released on Columbia Records in 1969, this is the first time this release has been made available on CD.

CD Reviews

Just the Music: No Book
A. Guyton | Fredericksburg, VA United States | 12/31/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I have heard this version of the Sorcerer's Apprentice music being called "flat", but I loved it as a kid, and I love sharing it with my kids. The music and narrative are clear and clean.

However, this was originally sold in 1969 and the early 1970s as a book-and-LP set, and this is JUST the CD. this is unfortunate, because the "turn the page!" is part of the recording- but your child has no page to turn, because there is no book! In fact, this re-release is part of a series that include several wonderful 1960s and 1970s recordings that had read-along books, only they didn't re-release the book, just the music. Finding the books can be a real adventure- and expensive, as they are now collector's items."
