Synopsis

People en Español
Winner of Britain's "The X-Factor," Leona Lewis debuts with a mix of pop and R&B. She is blessed with a vocal range that's so versatile, in songs like "Better In Time," that one may immediately compare her to Mariah Carey or Beyoncé Knowles, especially in "The First Time I Ever Saw You." It's not Lewis's fault that her voice doesn't distinguish her from these stars, but her producer, Simon Cowell (American Idol), plays it safe, and doesn't add anything new to what Tommy Mottola achieved with Mariah decades ago. That's not to say that the album is bad, but let's just hope Leona Lewis's sophomore effort shakes things up a bit more. --Ernesto Sánchez (People en Español )

CD Reviews

Spirit the Deluxe Edition
Auburn Niewiadomski | Anacortes, Washington | 09/03/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you want my opinions about Leona Lewis's vocals or songs from her first album you can find them on my review for her originally released Spirit CD, this review is just for the additional tracks and the DVD from her deluxe edition of Spirit.

I'm a Leona Lewis fan, that's for sure, so that may be why her deluxe edition for her first album Spirit is getting a flat out five star rating. But I do have some reasons for the given rating. But before I discuss the three new songs on this CD, I'd like to talk about the changes for her two songs "Better in Time" and "Footprints in the Sand." For the deluxe edition the two original recordings of these songs have been replaced with the single mixes. To my surprise, I actually liked the single mix for "Better in Time" more than the original, the piano intro is extended and I thought it sounded lovely. In my opinion the single mix could have been even better if it was just a piano ballad, but it is a great mix nonetheless. Also included is a remix created by Jason Nevins for Leona Lewis's hit "Bleeding Love." The two single mixes from her first album are the only changes, besides the "Bleeding Love" remix but that's an additional track, now let's discuss the three new songs on her deluxe edition! The first new song is "Myself" and is a duet with Novel. Novel has a unique voice, and it sounds very nice to say the least. The next song "Run" is probably reason alone to buy this CD. It's a strange enchanting song and I absolutely loved it. The last new song on this CD is "Forgiveness" and I absolutely LOVED this track. I haven't heard a song like this from Leona before, it just makes me smile. This is also the first time I've ever heard Leona talk her lyrics during a song, "if everyone could just forgive, the world would be a much better place...forgiveness." I really hope she sings more songs like this in the future. These three songs are just great additions to the CD. I do wish "A Moment Like This" was included on the CD though, but nonetheless it's a great CD.

But this isn't the end of Spirit the Deluxe Edition. There also is a DVD with seven of Leona Lewis's music videos. I don't really like music videos because many of them don't make the least bit of since, but I thought Leona Lewis's were made very well, I'm just sick of half dressed women dancing seductively in every single music video, I mean of course it catches my attention but it's so unoriginal, fortunately Leona Lewis stays clear from this. I wasn't going to talk much about the music videos...but I just have to mention a couple. The music video for "Forgive Me" seemed very Americanized, and Leona Lewis finally shows off some dance moves (And she's not that bad a dance either) But it really doesn't seem to be her style, and I just had to laugh, she had the strut going and everything but she's just too nice to sell it, even when she's trying to act tough she still seems like the nicest person in the world. She also gets to wear a top hat and ride a carousel......just watch the music video. The music video for Run was FANTASTIC. It's not my favorite song, but her music video for "Run" is very interesting. To me it was like...how about I give you a qoute from Leona, the song takes place "an enchanted, haunted forest. It's picking up on different elements of the song." That was similiar to what I was thinking. Leona Lewis looks beautiful in her music videos and while yet a couple of her music videos were confusing and seeming to go no where, they were still nice to watch. Down below is a list of each new single mix, remix and song on her CD, and a list of the music videos on the DVD;
