CD Reviews

WOW
Jeffrey Gaynor | MD | 04/05/2008

"This guy is the extension of Bud - I do not see where his teachings led to true disciples but as an artist he is in the pantheon with the giants.

Marsh and Konitz would have made their mark anyway - but as a player - incredible moving and inspiring art."
Twelve hundred stars!

"Mr. Tristano is one of the few real geniuses of this world. This album is certainly not easy listening, and I must admit that I listen a lot more often to Horace Silver (or the Rolling Stones) than to this masterpiece, but a masterpiece it is. A two-handed (polyphonic) improvisation plus an improvisation on the form. I wonder how Johann Sebastian Bach sounded when he improvised. Certainly Lennie Tristano's harmonies are a lot more extended than Bach's, but nonetheless he imposes very strict rules upon himself. And that is the true mastery - to express yourself freely within the strictest rules. A masterpiece! (Did I mention that this is a MASTERPIECE?)"
Amazing!

"What an original style, I've been playing piano for over 25 years and never even knew how profound this mans approach jazz improvisation was. especially at a time when bebop was flourishing. He was way ahead of his time in terms of harmony and rhythmic execution. It's ashamed his name is not mentioned in the halls of great jazz pianist."
