Synopsis

Product Description
Although music for the harp has been composed in every imaginable style over the centuries, certain structures and 'rules' came into being that were largely obeyed by every self-respecting composer. But in the last century things changed and composers broke through the restrictions of the past. Lavinia Meijer's new album, Visions, presents a varied picture of harp repertoire from the last forty years. Featured composers include Benjamin Britten, Toru Takemitsu and Isang Yun.

CD Reviews

Speed bump for a high talent, but fine Britten

(3 out of 5 stars)

"This second solo album disappoints because of poor source material. A third of the CD is given to mediocre R Patterson. He's a 2nd rate version of George Crumb, and Crumb isn't so hot himself. The Takemitsu selection is ok, harp plus taped voices & random sounds. In the 1970s, this must have seemed "hip" or do I mean "hep"? The other "new age" selections are typical new age blandness. But Britten's harp suite shows that our girl has the chops to be great--not good--great. Her career is coming to a fork in the road--will she record superior works by Carter & Hindemith & Salzedo and realize her destiny, or will she be satisfied with pap?"
