CD Reviews

Great Highlights from the Master
John Roos | 01/24/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I discovered Lalo Schifrin through an extraordinary album called "New Fantasy," released in about 1966. This was followed by another amazing album with a long title, shortened to Marquis de Sade. Unfortunately, neither album has been available for some time. This "Talkin' Verve" release contains four tracks from New Fantasy, particularly featuring some amazing trombone solos by J.J. Johnson. What a great way to hear some great compositions and arrangements by Schifrin."
Some of the best big band ever.

"John Roos' review about says it all. The only thing that would be better than this and "Return of the Marquis de Sade" would be the original recordings, "New Fantasy", "... Marquis de Sade", and "New Continent". (Although the "Return.." does feature Tom Scott, which is a treat.) It is criminal that these are not out on CD (like a lot of the '60s Gerald Wilson albums and Dizzy Gillespie and Gil Fuller and the "Monterey Jazz Festival Orchestra"). Gershwin's "Prelude #2" is one of the best big band charts ever recorded. Amazon would be well advised to list the personnel (including the best jazz recording engineer ever, RVG). They include Clark Terry, J.J. Johnson and Jerome Richardson, and quite a few other equally heavy weights.

Update (6/29/09): The Gerald Wilson Pacific Jazz recordings were available for a while from Mosaic Records, but I am afraid they are sold out now. I have been able to get "New Fantasy"New Fantasy and "... Marquis de Sade" Lalo Schifrin - Marquis De Sade as expensive imports ... they are worth every penny. If you can find them, buy them! The last time I looked they were available on Amazon. I am still hoping for a rerelease of "The New Continent". Viva Lalo (not to mention Dizzy)!"

"This is some incredible jazz pieces by Lalo. You will hear some echoes from maybe Bullitt, Dirty Harry and Mission Impossible in some of the cuts. This is a long overdue CD. Very good listening pleasure."
