Delightful Concertos from Vivaldi
JohnL | Alexander, NC United States | 05/07/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Antonio Vivaldi wrote more than 500 concertos, none more popular than "The Four Seasons" (Op.8). Previous to that he wrote a set of 12 Concerti known as "La Stravaganza", published in two books, or sets, as his Opus 4. These are not simply similar-sounding concertos. Vivaldi had a remarkable ability to come up with many wonderful ideas and melodies. These twelve are no exception, displaying an extraordinary level of creativity. The outer Allegros feature many interesting melodies and dazzling displays of pyrotechnics on the solo violin. The slow movements are among the most beautiful Vivaldi ever wrote. The soloist, Andrew Watkinson, relishes the fiery virtuoso passages, yet plays the slow Largos with grace and feeling. Fine support is provided by City of London Sinfonia, conducted by Nicholas Kraemer. A complete set of "La Stravaganza" is hard to find in the current catalog. This CD contains the first six (Nos. 1-6), whereas the last half-dozen (7-12) are contained on Volume 2 (Naxos 8.553324). I own both, and also recommend them. If you love the music of Vivaldi, you will enjoy these delightful and varied concerti from the Italian baroque master."
