Something you may like to know about the Piano Quintet...
Cory | Virginia | 02/24/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"After listening to most of Atterberg's recorded orchestral music, I became intersted in his chamber music. The sutie has a beautiful first movement, reminiscent of some of the slow movements in Atterberg's symphonies.

It was a surprise to me to discover that the Piano Quintet, which is about 30 minutes long and three movements, is merely a chamber arrangement of the Sixth Symphony "Dollar." It was disappointing that I didn't get to hear 30 minutes of new music, but the chamber arrangement proved to be interesting, as it condensed and emphasized the important parts of the symphony. Some portions are actually better than the symphony; however, I think I'll listen to the orchestration of the work on a more regular basis and pull out the chamber arrangement occassionally. It dawned on me that the quintet could be introduced to small ensembles as a way to increase the accessibility of Atterberg's most famous work, and thus increase awareness of the composer.

The horn sonata doesn't deliver as much as the Horn Concerto, but has similar elements and style."
Enjoyably Melodic

"Kurt Atterberg, a Swedish composer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, wrote some very beautiful compositions, and the three on this CD are no exception. This is yet another example of a little-known composer, who has written some very enjoyable music."
