His diamond-hard yakety solos were crucial to the rock and roll success story of the Coasters, and King's instantly recognizable horn graced countless more `50s and `60s R&B platters as both bandleader and sideman. But Curtis was nothing if not a versatile presence in the studio. He was developing a solid reputation within the jazz field at the dawn of the decade, waxing albums for Prestige with the likes of Nat Adderley, Wynton Kelly, and Oliver Nelson in support.
