CD Reviews

Flawless Recordings With Great Performances
Octavius | United States | 10/19/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"These re-releases of these recordings made in the 1950s are unquestionably one of, if not the only, recordings of such incredible quality that you will not hear a single minute defect in the sound of any sort. With also a flawless performance by Kirkpatrick, they are a priceless investment and addition to your Bach collection.

Recorded on a 35mm film reel, the sound quality is simply breathtaking: there are no defects at all. There is no hissing, no muffled notes, nothing whatsoever interfering between the music and your ear. You can actually hear every minute sound made by the harpsichord to the point that you would think Kirkpatrick is playing live right next to you. Although I can't say that Kirkpatrick is better than other greats for harpsichord/piano such as Rosen, Gould, or Pinnock, he is certainly equal to them without question. Get this CD box set while you can as you will not regret it at all. There is no recording out there (and very few modern ones) that even compare to the sound quality here.

Many CDs recorded between 1950 and 1970 are equal in quality to this performance as they were also recorded with 35mm reel: all such recordings are priceless additions to your collection worth buying without hesitation. If you truly know/love classical music and the harpsichord, it is simply impossible for you to be dissatisfied with these albums."
