Synopsis

Album Description
Dagored is proud to bring you Maestro Ennio Morricone's soundtrack to the 1982 controversial cult thriller "Butterfly", based on a novel by James M. Cain ("The Postman Always Rings Twice", "Double Indemnity"). The film is a sordid tale of father-daughter incest and murder involving Stacy Keach and renowned Hollywood sexpot Pia Zadora, as the temptress daughter, Kady. The film also represents the last screen performance of Orson Welles, who plays a Judge attempting to convict Keach's character for incest. Welles was nominated for "Best Supporting Actor" for his role here. Despite much criticism of the film itself and Zadora's relentless publicity campaign prior to the film's release, Zadora ultimately won a Golden Globe as "Best New Actress" for her performance (and to commemorate this, she unbelievably went on to name one of her children "Kady" after the character she played here!). The Morricone score itself is relatively quiet, compared to some of his more nail-biting works, but as always, Morricone is a master of transforming the psychology of the film's characters into music, which he does here with a subtle art that has made him THE undisputed maestro of film scores. The quality of his work was also recognized with the track "It's Wrong For Me To Love You", featuring vocals by Zadora, being nominated for "Best Original Song". Thanks in no small part to Pia Zadora's steamy performance here, both the film and soundtrack have become cult classics, with fans all over the world clamouring for its re-release on DVD.

CD Reviews

Trio in one of its best forms and really fantastic!
Ali Haluk | Istanbul, Turkey | 03/14/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Although Mr. Werner emphasizes that the trio is not his kind of musical form, "Form and Fantasy" is really great in that form. Sicilliene, a Bach interpration first played in solo piano than in trio, take you to to the dreams. Fantastic dreams! And as Mr. Werner said in liner notes: "The good thing about standarts is that they can withstand endless interpretations. They remain fresh and exciting to play. We could probably record Nardis or My Funny Valentine on every CD and have vastly different results each time".Don't make it a matter of probability Mr. Werner. Record and record again. Thank you..."
Great music

"These musicians sound like they are having so much fun playing together that it is no wonder that the music they produced is of such high quality. The easy unrestrained feeling that permeates this recording always makes me smile when I listen to it. While all the songs deserve attention I would say that "Nardis" is the highlight of the set. The arrangement of it is delightedly fresh and they seem to be enjoying themselves so much that when Werner bursts into song towards the end it is not entirely unexpected. This is beautiful music that everyone needs to hear."
Amazing and Great

"I saw him live this summer, and I couldn't believe that I had never heard of him before. He has some of the most beautifully done style and melodic changes, while showing deep respect for those who succeeded in composing int he past (Monk, Bach, and Evans).
You don't have to be a jazz junkie, or a piano know-it-all to like this music. It's a great CD and is one of the best if not THE best CD I own. Can't wait for volume 2..."
