Synopsis

After releasing CDs of standards, Christmas songs, and contemporary Christian music, Kathie Lee Gifford dives into adult contemporary pop with Heart of a Woman. Gifford is about as review-proof as they come; you love or hate her. It's sure to be that way with this disc, which finds her breathily emoting one (occasionally Gifford-cowritten) midtempo ballad after another. Never as likably brash/obnoxious as she can be in her looser TV moments, Heart is either sickly sincere or transparently cynical, depending on your point of view. Only the listener can truly decide, though. --Rickey Wright

And I Like Her!

"I'll admit it. I like Kathie Lee (Gifford). Yeah, she's easy to make fun of, but basically, I am okay with her. So, it is with a clean slate and no preconceived dislike, that I tackle this review.Heart of A Woman is a bad album. It commits a cardinal sin in pop music: It is boring. Kathie Lee has a lovely voice. A voice well-suited for Broadway or standards or lullabyes. But a pop music voice it is not. Her voice is far too mannered to make a successful go at pop music. She needs to relax and be less strict in the way she puts a song across. It is as if she just came out of vocal diction school and this is her first time trying out what she learned. The material doesn't do her much justice either. The album is awash in bland ballads and some genuine disasters. Kathie co-wrote four of the album's songs and with the exception of the title track, none make much of an impact. In fact one track, "Heartache, Heartache" will likely go down as one of the worst songs ever recorded in pop history. It is embarrassingly bad. Another clunker is "Make My Day". You almost hope Dirty Harry does show up and shoot a hole through the CD.That is not to say the whole effort goes down in flames. The first three songs on the CD are fine efforts, especially the warm and touching title track. The first single off the album, the heavily produced "Love Never Fails" is a perfectly pleasing pop song, but it could be sung by anyone, and Kathie's solid voice gets lost in the overproduction. In sum, nice try Kathie, but I'm afraid this Heart of A Woman won't beat for long. Grade: D"
Foghorn, foghorn

"Singing? Blaring "Heartache heartache" like an off key foghorn is more like it. Her twitchy awkward singing performance on late night tv made me cringe. She looked like Mick Jagger in drag with 2x4 inserted in an uncomfortable place. I thought she might be having a seizure. And although I know this review will not be considered helpful by most people, what is the deal with people marking every negative review as "not helpful". Not helpful to whom? There were some really insightful, thoughtful but negative reviews marked as not helpful."

"As a huge dance, trance, and techno fan, several friends of mine gathered to review this album in my home. Needless to say, we were quite disappointed. To listen to any composition on this album with "remix" in the title is quite disturbing. In my opinion, remixes are made from original hits that have already been sucessful in the music industry. This, however, does not live up to our expectations. It does have a good beat yet it isn't the groove driven dance beats of artists like "Cher", "Madonna" and "Janet Jackson". The music in general is depressing as well as a story about Kathy Lee's heartache and pain she has felt in her many years with Mr. Gifford. We did try to give this album a chance. Again, we appreciate the effort, yet it doesn't live up to today's musical standards. Thanks but no thanks Kathy Lee. :)"
