Judicious selection of Jussi's 78 rpm master recordings
05/29/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If you are a Bjorling fan or an opera-lover who enjoys listening to the great voices of the past, this judicious selection of Bjorling's 78 rpm recordings (1935-1941) is definitely worth acquiring. Notwithstanding the persistent surface noise (hence the deduction of one star in rating)which comes from using the original discs without any sound reduction process, the voice retains a full and cristalline tone that characterized Bjorling's inimitable style. The "Ideale" and "O Sole mio" are sung with a surprisingly Mediterranean flavor, yet tastefully crafted; the sometimes metallic ring of so-called remastered versions that are now available under other labels has been softened and the full coloration of Bjorling's stunning voice ravishes our ears. If you have never heard this great artist (and can tolerate less than perfect sound), this CD would be an excellent introduction to his style, vocal resplendence, and interpretative genius. You'll see why numerous critics have ranked him on the same level with Caruso and Gigli. Regrettably there are no program notes nor references for each selection."
Practically criminal

(1 out of 5 stars)

"Looking to become acquainted with one of the most divine voices of the century? Then don't look (or listen) here! The best thing about this CD is the cover photo. The tracks, (no dates, but they are recognizeable as recordings compiled elsewhere from the 1930-45 period), have disappointingly poor sound quality. About half are the same recordings found on the EMI CHD 7610532 Jussi Bjoerling: Opera Arias; all can be found in the 4-CD Studio Recordings set from last year. (On top of it, they left out the '45 Nessum Dorma! the '44 Vesti! the '37 Lucevan! What *were* they thinking?!)Just say NO to this offering - it's practically criminal."
The Tenor of the century at bargain price

"This is an excellent for lovers of Jussi Björling, and I suppose that includes almost everyone. He has never been equalled for sheer vocal beauty, superb musicianship and impeccable technique. Even though the recordings are old, this is a very good bargain."
