Synopsis

Album Description
Julius Burger had to wait till his mid-nineties to receive even a portion of the recognition he deserved as a composer. That was when, in 1991, several of his compositions were given for the first time at Alice Tully Hall in New York. An assistant conductor of the Berlin Opera in his youth, Burger had joined the Met in New York in the 1920s, then returned to Europe to work with Otto Klemperer at the Berlin Staatsoper and arrange music for the BBC in London. In 1939, after escaping the Nazis, he returned to the Met as an assistant conductor. He had written a number of original works over the years, but these were only discovered in 1990 by his attorney, Ronald S. Pohl, who then arranged the concert. Some of these works had been written fifty years before! Julius Burger died at his home in Queens in 1995, at the age of ninety-eight.
