CD Reviews

Dramatic reading
Timothy F. Ortlieb | USA | 05/10/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"It seems this recording gets overlooked in discussions of the best versions of Die Jahreszeiten but at least one source, "1001 Classical Recordings You Must Hear Before You Die," places it above all others, including the acclaimed period instruments performances (Gardiner, Jacobs, et al). This endorsement and the success of Karajan's Die Schoepfung for DG led me to buy this affordable set. It has many of the virtues of Karajan's Die Schoepfung, including two holdovers in Janowitz and Berry, a large chorus that sings with heft, plus the recording venue of Jesus Christus Kirche. The recording is atmospheric and well balanced for dramatic impact, conveying shadow as well as light. This is one of the slowest versions available but the performance seldom drags. Other versions no doubt have their insights but I'm pleased with this purchase. On the down side, you have to download and print the libretto from the internet."
