"For anyone who has watched a "Three Tenors" concert and thought that the Carreras was less than stellar, this CD will prove to be a revelation.I used to wonder at Carreras' popularity. To me, his voice never sounded all that amazing. And I could never understand when people would call Carreras their favourite tenor etc. Then, I heard this CD (it is also available as "An Evening with Jose Carreras" on Opera D'Oro). I realised that Carreras had a very short vocal prime. His voice deteriorated very quickly because he (unwisely) sang all of his major roles by age 30. Therefore, his voice lost much of its brilliance well before his bout with leukemia. But to hear these live clips of performances from the 70's is to be in vocal heaven. Few tenors sound so idiomatic in the music of Verdi and Puccini. Carreras' passion and inspired interpretations are truly wonderful to behold. His Riccardo (from BALLO IN MASCHERA) is now my very favourite. His "Ingemsico" from Verdi's REQUIEM has to be heard to be believed (and that can be pretty much said about every track on this disc).Italian tenor singing doesn't get better than this. Buy the CD!!!"
