Johnny Smith - 5 Stars; CD Quality 0 Stars

(2 out of 5 stars)

"My father was buying Johnny Smith albums in the 1950's. Not well known by many people, Johnny Smith is arguably one of the best jazz guitarists of all time. He probably would have received that credit more widely had he not chosen to leave the jazz scene in the late 1950's to move to Colorado to raise his daughter (a laudible and selfless act). For years, he ran a music store in Colorado Springs.

When I bought this album, I was truly excited to acquire an anthology of Johnny Smith's work. That was shattered by the absoulutely disgusting mastering of this album. The original LP's (inherited from my father and played countless times), with all of their pops and scratches, sound better than this CD. It sounds like somebody cued up an LP on a cheap stereo and recorded this CD from it with a microphone. Johnny Smith deserves better than this! The poor--no, non-existent--re-mastering of these recordings is shameful.

Maybe someday someone will re-master these recordings and therein capture the magnificent talent of Johnny Smith's playing. Until then, guard your LP's if you have them. If you don't, I guess you can buy this CD and dream about what could have been."
