CD Reviews

Crawford's best work
Huck Hound | Portland, OR USA | 09/10/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If you liked the early days of Johnny Crawford, this CD is a must have item. He delivers commemorable renditions of the classics Tennessee Waltz and Vaya Con Dios as well as Donna and Patti Ann. This disk includes Daydreams and Your love is growing cold which were minor hits circa 1961."
Fine album of Johnny Crawford's early ones

"Johnny Crawford could sing sweetly and make the girls swoon; and this album proves it. This truly IS some of Johnny's best work; and the quality of the sound is excellent.

"Daydreams" begins the album with a wistful number as Johnny's character prays for time alone with his one true love. Johnny never misses a note and the strings enhance the natural beauty of this number. "Patti Ann" continues with another song that has Johnny dreaming of living life with his beloved. Moreover, I really like "Lucky Star;" this early 1960s type of rock ballad has a country twist to it and Johnny sings it so well.

"Please Mr. Sun" is a rather romantic ballad that Johnny croons so well; he hits the nail on the head with this unblemished performance! Johnny's interpretation of "Tennessee Waltz," made so famous by Patti Page, really has Johnny putting his own stamp on this number to make his version a sweet country style waltz theme.

"Your Love Is Growing Cold" features Johnny singing squarely in the spotlight; I like this song a lot. "Donna" is another love ballad that swings and sways slowly but sweetly and Johnny sounds great. The album concludes with "Vaya Con Dios;" this is an interesting ballad since Johnny takes this classic ballad and superimposes an early rock and roll flavor to the arrangement.

My only complaint is that they could have--and should have--added at least one or two more songs to this CD. What a shame!

This disc is a must-have for fans of Johnny Crawford (as if they didn't know that already); and if you like singers like Wayne Newton then Johnny Crawford is right up your alley. Johnny had a tremendous ability to sing and entertain us with his talent; and we are all better off for it.
