CD Reviews

Cash will make you hurt, in a good way

"What an amazing cover. I loved the Nine Inch Nails song when I was a teenager. It never occurred to me how well it would transfer to this aging legend. Cash's quivering voice presses the sorrow and regret of this song. It is absolutely beautiful. Now, I did not like the B-side of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" all that much. I just do not think Cash captured it like he did "Hurt." Hurt is great; I highly recommend you get this.epc"
Don't be prejudiced by the brilliance of "Hurt"...

"Most reviewers on this page will tell you that they didn't much care for "Personal Jesus". After listening to "Hurt" for the first time, I would have to see their point. Hurt is such a masterpiece that Personal Jesus at first, pales in comparison.
I just listened to Depeche Mode's version followed by Cash's (O.K. maybe 20 times back and forth..). Cash has shown true genius in adapting this song. If you don't like the original, I think you will like the cover. If you loved the original, prepare to be stunned.... Some great songs only take on their greatness after a few listens. I think this is one of those."
A Reminder of the Power behind the Great Man Johnny Cash
E. Callaway | 09/13/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I recall listening to Johnny Cash when I was a child in the early 80's when my father was a fan. I admire the power of Mr. Cash's rendition of Trent Reznor's "Hurt". When I first heard Nine Inch Nails' song---I thought it was a great song. But I must say that Johnny Cash's verison literally blows the original verison away. Not many of my generation (Gen-X) who are now reaching their 30's are too familiar with Johnny Cash. Neither does the current generation (Gen-Y or Gen-whatever) really know who this man was & its a shame that they never will. He was a great influence to music (Rock, Country, Blues) that not many realize. Justin Timberlake tried in a failed attempt to let this current generation extend respect to such a great artist. Maybe if he would have stepped down from receiving the MTV award---he would have made his point clear. I had an opporntunity to know about Johnny Cash & his music due to having parents who were teenagers during the 50's. I'm glad that I have. His music, whether it is his own or a cover of someone else's work, is a true treat for any music-lover to enjoy. May God bless Johnny Cash for his gift to us. May he rest in peace with his beloved wife. The Music Industry really should morn for this great loss."
