CD Reviews

THE DEBUT RECORDING BY A MASTER FINALLY RELEASED
tadd scott | new york, new york | 06/23/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"this is KLEMMER'S VERY FIRST album & it is amazing in it's maturity & musicality. this cd shows his already completly developed sense of beauty, tenderness, passion, emotionalism, sense of direction & an already developed unique style of his own plus the total mastery of both his instrument and composing skills as well as his ability's as a group leader. the only difference here from his later albums is in the style. here it's more of a straight ahead jazz feel but there are still overwhelming & obvious signs of the ballads & bossa novas etc. that were to yet to come. noone really knew this recording ever existed in the later years of his career espescialy those music etc. critics that upon the massive success of his TOUCH etc. recording said "he couldn't play jazz" & that "all he could play was make out music" etc. this recording is the ORIGINAL SOURCE of where all the later beautiful recordings came from. obviously klemmer later on in his career had the confidence, discipline, experience & courage to play so eloquently simply [of which some have critcised] as he had no need for his ego to show off or prove himself to anyone. he already had here."

"This is truely classic John Klemmer. I heard this music before joining the Navy. It is rich, full of the wonderment that elieve it was released on Chess makes modern jazz the artform that it is today. I beleive it was released on Chess records?

The selection Will 'N' Jug is my favorite selection, and includes on the most brilliant Bass solos I've ever heard. still looking for Barefoot Ballet.................paul ford"
