Synopsis

Album Description
Exhibiting a lyrical and solid baroque playing technique, Swiss cellist Martin Zeller interprets J. S. Bach's first three unaccompanied cello suites on the only remaining Jacobus Stainer cello in existence. Constructed in 1673 in what is now Austria, the magnificent Stainer cello alone makes this required listening, and one can only wonder if Bach himself actually played or heard this specific instrument. The sound of this rare cello is vividly brought to life with MA Recordings' exemplary 88.2 kHz digital recording technique, utilizing handmade microphones and high purity silver cables by Crystal Cable of Holland.

CD Reviews

Martin Zeller: Very Comparable to Your Favorite Cellist
ClasseekGeek | Honolulu, HI | 05/14/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Here is music to soothe the soul, calm the senses and captivate the heart. Martin Zeller is a cellist flying under the radar, but is one to watch. His playing is smooth and his tonality comes across as clear as water. One wonders if given the opportunity to record the entire cello suite repertoire if Zeller would exemplify seamless intonation and phrasing reminiscent of Maurice Gendron Bach: The 6 Cello Suites and even Steven Isserlis (unfortunately a bit overpriced by Amazon) [[ASIN:B000OQDV1U Bach: The Cello Suites]

MA Recordings has chosen to release the first three suites in Volume 1. Available from Amazon, this disk has been made available since June 2009 and is listed at a fair and reasonable price. This recording is brilliantly engineered: the 17th century cello produces such a beautiful sound that is very easy on the ear. There is no harshness at all, which is all the more attractive given that I have some high frequency loss.

Highly recommended! When will Volume 2 be released?

Recording: 5 stars. Sonic Engineering: 5 stars. Production Values/Packaging: 5 stars. Track Selection: 5 stars."
