Synopsis

Album Description
Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1959 album from the master of the Bossa Nova. The Chega De Saudade album is supplemented by the impossibly rare EP of songs from the film Black Orpheus and recordings of some of the famous songs from Chega De Saudade by contemporaries such as Elizete Cardoso, Os Cariocas, Alaide Costa, Norma Bengell and Bola Sete. In the summer of 1958, a singer-guitarist from Bahia in the north of Brazil called Joao Gilberto created a musical revolution when he joined with Bossa Nova's seminal songwriting team, the gifted composer Ant"nio Carlos Jobim, and the poet and former diplomat, Vinicius de Moraes, to record the songs that would launch this cool, futuristic new music for a confident new era. Gilberto brought an unprecedented guitar style and a hushed, understated form of vocal expression that defined the movement and changed the course of music history. 24 tracks. El. 2010.

CD Reviews

Is there anything to say, really
Idiosyncrat | California | 04/17/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is likely the most influential Brazilian album of all time. There is really little to say about it that hasn't been said over and over for 50 years. Many of the most influential Brazilian musicians of the last 50 years cite this album as one of their very primary influences: Caetano Veloso and Jorge Ben are the biggest examples there, out of many, many others. The 1960's Byrd/Getz bossa nova craze was also largely inspired by this album.

If you're mildly interested in this album, you should probably get it."
Finalmente!

"Finalmente!
The real stuff
Fred Schroyer | Waynesburg, PA USA | 05/03/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you are into Brazilian popular music (MPB), including its early years in the late 1950s, this is a CD to treasure. It's the real stuff. Joao Gilberto & Elizete Cardoso offering the first recorded bossa nova, Chega de Saudade (loosely, "no more blues"). Actually, several versions of that famous song. 26 tracks altogether from Joao, Alaide Costa, & others, inclusing Desafinado and A Felicidade from the 1959 film Orpheu Negro (Black Orpheus). To me, the whole CD is Ah, Felicidade!"
