CD Reviews

As ever, the impecable Jo Stafford
Nigel Bailey | Deltona Lakes, FL United States | 07/20/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I have been a fan of Jo Stafford for 60 years, and this 2 CD set gives the listener a wonderful selection of her artistry. It is impossible really to select some songs as typical because I do not feel that Jo had a typical style. She was just so talented that all other singers pale into insignificance by comparison. Most modern singers should buy this set and listen to it for hours every day, listen to the pitch, the phrasing, the breath control, all are superb. I especially recommend this to Simon Cowell and the rest of the judges of American Idol. Simon likes to think he is a good judge of singers, really, listen to El Divo, with all the pitch wobble and vibrato all over the place, YUK. Not to mention all the "chorus" and "echo" added. You might also listen to Andrea Bocelli, I liked him originally, then listened and heard all the notes hit off key and then scraped up to the correct note.

Back to this set, a few of the highlights are "If", "Temptation" (this track is a riot), "Ragtime Cowboy Joe", these are 3 samples of her different styles. The Jonathan and Darleen Edwards sets are also a riot, and very difficult to do. I would think that this set is an absolute must if you like older songs, very, very, well sung."
