2008 release, a collection of Jimmy Witherspoon's Modern recordings. This CD is much more than a mere 'Best Of The Rest' - featuring, as it does, all of the remaining unreissued Modern masters, the best of the yet-to-be-issued alternate takes, two ultra-rare gospel masters and a brace of previously-unissued ballads. Spoon recorded prolifically for Modern - and on several occasions - between 1947 and 1961. His early recordings show influences that range from Louis Jordan to Billy Eckstine, but always enhanced by Spoon's own unique talent. These selections are taken from the original Modern acetates and mastertapes, where available (which is almost everywhere). Where tapes and acetates were not available, pristine 78s and 45s were pressed into service for optimum audio satisfaction. 30 tracks Ace.
