Even the dyed in the wool collector of Jimmy Rushing may not have some of the PREBASIE cuts here, except perhaps the Blue Devil Blues. The sound has been remastered in an interesting but sometimes annoying way. Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy, can it be 37 years since you left us. No one sings the blues, No one can swing a big band as a singer, the way Mr. Rushing did. These are all full band cuts with Moten and Basie and they are so rich and creamy and delightful.
I would have been happier if there were more non-Blues items out of Jimmy's repertoire with Basie, but this is nice, as good as it gets to hear just straight Jimmy." |
