CD Reviews

Smooth Electro Funk Madness-here and there
Andre' S Grindle | Bangor,ME. | 03/31/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I will have to deduct one star from the Jeff Lorber Fusion
Band's "In The Heat Of The Night" as it contains a fair amount of filler-mostly in lame stabs at funk-rock towards the end of the album. But the smooth groove of "Tropical" the Rockit-like
proto scratch funk of "Blast Off" are particular highlights even as the slightly forboding groove of "Really Scarry" and
the catchy title song explore more melodic textures. Not bad but not all it couldv'e been."
One Slightly Better Is Step By Step

"There's enough infectious grooves to keep the balance of this cd on the up and up.A couple of tracks border on campy pop-rock synth movie soundtrack material. Some tracks will sound dated but suitable by 80's standards. However, most of Lorber's earlier synthesizer and keyboard work and arrangements are still creative.Once heard a friend describe Jeff Lorber as the Kenny G. of R&B, pop-synthesizer music. This was easy R&B,soft-funk,pop-jazz with some pop-rock infused for good 'ol midnight partying and listening back in the day. His next release Step By Step was produced by Mic Murphy and David Frank (The System). It's a little more polished in production but a little bit ahead of In The Heat of the Night. It is also a very rare out of print cd Japanese import title to get a hold of also.

In The Heat of the Night is a good start to get into the Lorber sound !"
