CD ReviewsGet your groove move on Daniel Rutkowski | Wernersville, PA USA | 09/23/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "Jeff Kashiwa has put together a winning combination of tunes that will easily move the listener to push Play on this CD over and over. From the bluesy, solo improvisation of Prologue until the concluding Epilogue, the seasoned or novice Jeff Kashiwa listener is going to love this release. Fixing his energies solely on the tenor sax, Jeff makes great air on the best work of his career thus far. The ensemble he gathered for this album has such chemistry that they effortlessly created music that is embraceable without getting bogged down in a full understanding of its mechanics. Led by Kashiwa's unfettered playing, the band pours forth some of the most melodic improvisation on the 4:52 tune "The Lucky One" featuring an outstanding horn arrangement played by a horn section consisting of David Mann on tenor sax, Barry Danielian on trumpet and Michael Davis on trombone. You are going to love these guys again on "Movin' Up," "Changes," and "So Many Ways." Also on these tunes, visiting bassist Alex Al and drummer Teddy Campbell lay down a rhythm that keeps the listener movin' and groovin'. "Blue Jeans" at 5:22 is the longest tune on the album and invokes a particularly casual mood. It is here that Russell Ferrante joins the Coastal Access band on the Rhodes electric piano and Mike Ricchiuti contributes on Hammond B3 organ. "New View" features Ferrante improvising on acoustic piano and the ever-consistent Melvin Davis delivers on electric bass. "Fall" is a tune where the tempo is slow, the mood is melancholy, and Roger Burn contributes a subtle touch of the blues on the vibraphone while Dave Hooper shines on drums and crash cymbal. A slow tune with an excellent and interesting twist develops on "Once Again" where Mike Ricchiuti weighs in with the Hammond B3 organ. Play is just what the doctor ordered for all those who want to know what Jeff Kashiwa's live venues are like; the production values imparted by Dave Kochanski and Kashiwa have captured how it feels to experience Jeff in a live environment.
