CD Reviews

A musicians' musician

(5 out of 5 stars)

"The previous reviewer apparently came to this CD expecting a vocal showcase?? Jef is primarily a guitarist; one of the best, most versatile guitarists around. His playing is incredibly fresh and contemporary, while also dripping with rock, blues and funk tradition. He's obviously listened to, and absorbed all the greats. His solos often remind me of players like Jeff Beck, Larry Carlton, Jay Graydon, John Scofield, Hiram Bullock, Robben Ford & others. But soloing is only a small part of what Jef has to offer. His rhythm guitar work is equally amazing. But wait,... there's more! He also plays all the instruments on most tracks, and he's an incredible bassist, good drummer, and he writes very interesting tunes. And oh yes, he sings. He's no Luther Vandross, but he sings well; in tune and with plenty of feeling. He gets the job done, but I wouldn't call him a vocalist (be forewarned if this is a problem for you). I'd call him a musician/songwriter who sings. All of his CDs are good; I recommend every one of them. Stylistically, the material (on all of his CDs) is all over the map, and somewhat of a mixed bag. But I consider that a plus. He's not afraid to take risks, and include a few tunes that most listeners probably won't like. Very refreshing. The guy is so creative, it's sickening."
