CD Reviews

Jaye P Morgan/ Her 1956 Album Debut
01/22/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This was Jaye P Morgan's first LP release for RCA Victor in 1956.
It consists of twelve standards sung in the mellow vocal style
that emerged from the big band era. The orchestra was conducted
by Hugo Winterhalter with whom she had considerable success.Unquestionably, it is a pleasant album for listening, but the
best was yet to come. The following year Jaye P released her
second LP for RCA conducted by Marion Evans,
entitled "Just You, Just Me." It was on this album that
she really proved herself as a vocal talent. And, does anyone remember those two wonderful LPs from 1960
"Down South" and "Up North" released on MGM Records? Jaye P.
never looked lovelier than she did on the album covers of those
two LPs.I had the good fortune to meet Jaye P. backstage after a performance in "Sugar Babies",
(she toured with the show in the early 1980s) and mentioned her consummate rendition of the
song "Birmingham Papa, Your Memphis Mama's Comin' to Town,"
which she recorded for the "Down South" LP. If I recall correctly, she said that
nobody had mentioned that song since
the day she recorded it in the studio. I simply flipped the
first time that I heard Jaye P. sing it. It's one song that
defines Jaye P's unlimited talent for belting out a song. So, how much longer do her fans have to wait for the rest of
catalog to be released on CD?"
