CD Reviews

One of the Best CDs I've heard

(5 out of 5 stars)

"WOW! This is the first time I've bought one of Janet Pashcal's CDs but it definitely will not be the last. I've listened to it 2 or 3 times and am totally impressed. Normally a CD will have 1 or 2 good songs and the rest really aren't that great. What a Delight, "the good road" is filled with high quality, very encouraging music. I only consider 2 of the 10 songs "OK" the other 8 are GREAT! All songs are well done - great dynamic variety and orchestrations. Janet's voice and interpretation are great; she really communicates the text of the song vocally in the wide variety of styles required by the music. The other great thing about the CD is the variety of musical styles it covers gospel, contemporary jazz, traditional and big band - swing. The cuts "His Truth Keeps Marching On" and "Faithful Father" have lush, rich, more traditional orchestral and vocal accompaniments. The dynamics and phrasing are superb and could not be done better; they really communicate the text of the songs. "Put A Part of You (in the Heart of Me) and "I am Changed" have a very sophisticated contemporary jazz sound with more simple accompaniments but both are very well done. The above songs contrast nicely with "God Will Make a Way", "The Lord Will Go Before You" and "Rock of Ages, Hide Me Again" all in a gospel style but with a twist. Two are slightly more southern gospel and one is more of a black gospel sound. The remaining songs on the CD are just as good as the previous ones. "In the Middle of it All" is quiet and contemplative. "Another Soldier Coming Home" I believe is the about her grandfathers transition from this life to the next. My Favorite is "Higher Ground" - the traditional hymn but done in a big band/swing style that works extremely well. A final note. If you do any public singing almost all of these songs are available in accompaniment tapes. Exactly the same orchestral accompaniments and back up voices, in the same musical range as you hear on this CD but without Janet's voice. As I said initially I'm impressed. Every time I listen to the CD I hear more which is a sign of well done music; there's a lot here musically. Because of the quality of the music and wide variety of styles, I can't recommend the CD enough."
