Enamored since childhood with the Ella Fitzgerald Christmas record Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas, the young jazz singer Jane Monheit does the departed legend proud on her first seasonal spin. Monheit's in great and varied voice throughout, proving she can swing with a bigger section of added horn players, or croon, purr and excite with her more stylish quartet players with whom she works live and often records. While nailing the familiar Christmas fare she can also surprise with unexpected tunes like "My Grown Up Christmas List" and the left-field choice, "Moonlight In Vermont." Veteran producer Al Schmitt whose credits are almost as golden as Fitzgerald's, wisely puts Monheit's voice front and center, letting her put on an array of vocal faces, from the girlish to sophisticated. Monheit's keen ability to reinvent notes while never losing her stride or the song's character will delight fans and newcomers. She's got something fine in the bag for those jazz fans who know that the real gifts jazz singers bring to the mix are virtuosity, a sure sense of the tradition in which they're working and some risk taking. At a still decidedly young age, Monheit generously rewards them, just in time for Christmas. -- Martin Keller

CD Reviews

Destined to Become a Holiday Classic
J. Cummings | Seattle, WA United States | 11/02/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I've been a big fan of Jane Monheit since her first release and am always amazed at her vocal range and wonderful interpretation of standards. Being a lover of both Christmas and Jane, I was excited to hear that she was recording a Holiday album and I must say that this release lives up to all of my expectations. As for the first reviewers comments, I can only say that it would be ludicrous to put the same emotion into a Christmas song as a Cole Porter song. Why would you sing a song about a fat man with a sack on his back in the same manner as a song about a love affair gone bad? And yes, she is sexy. She was in her previous releases too."
Merry Christmas Everybody!!!

"Oooh, I just love this album more and more each time I listen to it. I swear, I've probably listened to the entire album about 35 times already, and I find it to be brilliant. I light a Christmas scented candle, sneek under a blanket and pick up one of my favorite books while looking at the snow falling outside my window. And to make the evening complete I put on Jane Monheit's Christmas album in the background. What a perfect evening! Christmas is finally around the corner :-) Have fun listening to this wonderful album, guys, I sure am!"
Don't buy if you have iPod

"The songs on the CD are great. Jane Monheit has a beautiful voice and she performs several christmas classics well. This "enhanced" version is horrible however. Sony has "enhanced" this version of the CD so that you cannot import the music into iTunes and then subsequently play it in your iPod. You can only use it in Sony digital players."
