Synopsis

Album Description
The haunted beauty of Jandek's early work went through many phases, never quite as varied & multi-faceted as his 4th masterwork "Chair Beside A Window" originally issued in 1982. It's not hard to imagine it as the Jandek equivalent of a Dylan phase, however insanely translated.

CD Reviews

Nancy Sings!
J. Klausmeyer | Ann Arbor, MI, Earth | 08/19/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Released in 1982, this is the first Jandek album to feature outside musicians, which helps to vary Jandek's sound. A very good addition is the singer identified only as "Nancy," who has quite a nice voice--quite a change from Jandek's usual desolate crooning.

If you are exploring the world of Jandek, this disk is a pretty good one to start with. The song "European Jewel" features bass, drums, and guitar, along with Jandek singing--it sounds almost like early Sonic Youth. And the song "Love" has a-typical lyrics about self-worth--Jandek's first feel-good tune, I guess.

Several of Jandek's other albums released up until 1986 feature Nancy, they are all among his more enjoyable efforts. It's too bad she doesn't appear on more. Maybe now that Jandek is actually playing live shows, he will have an on-state reunion with Nancy!"
Jandek is challenging
John Wayne | Oklahoma: Native America | 02/17/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Jandek is challenging for those who do not know music history. Jandek is influenced by pre war acoustic blues such as Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lead Belly. He is also influenced by Free Jazz and Improvisation such as John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. Once you realize this, his music makes more sense. I recommend all of his albums."
